During their harrowing 477 days in Hamas captivity, four freed Israeli hostages recounted stories of courage, resilience, and mutual support. The women described being moved frequently across Gaza, at times through tunnels and at other times hidden in civilian areas, as Hamas sought to avoid detection.

The women endured degrading conditions, often lacking basic hygiene and being forced to cook and clean for their captors. Despite these hardships, they remained unbroken. Liri Albag emerged as the group’s leader, keeping their spirits high and supporting her friends throughout the ordeal. The captors mockingly called them “the soldiers,” but the women defiantly maintained their morale and inner strength.

Their captivity included exposure to propaganda broadcasts from networks like Al Jazeera, as well as updates on IDF operations in Gaza, deepening their awareness of the conflict’s intensity. They recounted the heartbreaking news of a December 2023 building collapse that claimed the lives of 21 soldiers, describing that period as particularly tense. Despite being separated from fellow hostage Agam Berger shortly before their release, their steadfast hope and resilience remained unshaken.

Their resilience peaked during a staged display by Hamas at the time of their release. Despite the pressure, the women refused to succumb. “We showed them on that stage that it didn’t faze us. We’re stronger than this,” they said.

Liri Albag shared a touching moment, noticing a “Hope” hat inspired by her tattoo—a symbol of her family’s unwavering belief in her return.

Naama Levy’s time in captivity overlapped with Doron Steinbrecher, released earlier. Together, they coped with the ordeal by maintaining their fitness, using exercise routines to preserve their mental and physical strength.

These stories highlight the unyielding spirit of these women, who emerged from captivity with their faith and hope intact, bolstered by the prayers and support of a united Israel.
