Mike Huckabee, the new U.S. Ambassador to Israel, began his official visit on Friday with a prayer at the Western Wall—even before presenting his letter of credence to President Isaac Herzog. The gesture, rich in symbolism, reflects Huckabee’s deep connection to the State of Israel—and to Jerusalem in particular. He arrived in Israel on Thursday.

One of the Most Prominent Pro-Israel Figures

Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas and U.S. presidential candidate, is widely known as one of the most strongly pro-Israel figures in American politics. His appointment was confirmed last month by the U.S. Senate with a vote of 53 to 46—all Republican senators voted in favor, along with just one Democrat.

Over the past several years, Huckabee has visited Israel more than 100 times. He is an enthusiastic supporter of Israel’s right to defend itself, and has consistently expressed clear support for Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. Known for his staunchly conservative views, he is especially popular within the evangelical Christian community in the United States.

He Sees His Role as a Personal Mission

Sources close to Huckabee say he views his role in Israel as “the fulfillment of a personal mission and a deeply held belief.” He is expected to be an especially active ambassador, particularly in light of the current regional challenges—security, economic, and diplomatic.

The formal presentation of his credentials is scheduled to take place early next week at the President’s Residence.
