France Voices ‘Deep Concern’ — Israel Says Strike on Hezbollah Vital

France issued an official statement Monday expressing “deep concern” following Israel’s elimination of Hezbollah’s Chief of Staff in Beirut, warning that the operation increases the risk of escalation in the region. Paris urged all parties to “exercise restraint” and underscored the importance of preserving the UN-recognized ceasefire monitoring mechanism.

“Exercise Restraint”

In its communiqué, the French Foreign Ministry reminded both sides that the oversight mechanism is known to all parties and remains “essential for ensuring the security of the civilian population in Israel and Lebanon” under the ceasefire framework.

The Beirut Operation

On Sunday, the IDF carried out a precise strike in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district, killing senior Hezbollah commander Haitham Ali Tabataba’i, the organization’s Chief of Staff.

Israel viewed the operation as necessary to prevent imminent and ongoing threats, citing Tabataba’i’s long history of orchestrating attacks on Israeli civilians and his central role in Hezbollah’s military build-up on the northern border.

Additional Eliminations

Hezbollah later announced that four additional operatives were killed alongside Tabataba’i:
Qassem Hussein Barjaoui (“Malek”), Mustafa As’ad Baro (“Al-Hajj Hassan”), Rif’at Ahmad Hussein (“Abu Ali”), and Ibrahim Ali Hussein (“Amir”).

Background

The operation comes amid heightened tensions in the north, where Hezbollah has continued cross-border attacks despite international efforts to stabilize the area. France’s concern highlights Europe’s apprehension that the conflict may widen, though Israel insists its actions are defensive and intended to prevent further bloodshed.

Biblical Reflection

Israel’s effort to protect its citizens resonates with the biblical charge:

“Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.” — Proverbs 24:11
