Colombia coal exports to Israel will resume under President Abelardo de la Espriella, marking another sign of warming relations between Bogotá and Jerusalem.

The new Colombian government is reversing the 2024 decision by outgoing President Gustavo Petro, who banned coal exports to Israel during the war in Gaza. From now on, Colombia will again allow coal exports to Israel.

Colombia’s presidency said the reactivation of coal exports to Israel is among the measures adopted during De La Espriella’s first days in office. The move follows his broader pledge to restore Colombia’s relationship with Israel after years of tension under Petro.

Ecclesiastes says, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.” In diplomacy, that principle is not sentimental. Nations choose partners, rebuild trust, and decide whether cooperation or ideological hostility will guide their future.

Colombia Coal Exports Resume

Petro’s government announced in 2024 that Colombia would suspend coal sales to Israel over the Gaza war. At the time, relations between the two countries had already deteriorated sharply.

That policy now appears to be changing quickly. De La Espriella has presented a different direction, one that seeks to restore ties with Israel and reopen practical cooperation.

Coal matters because it is not only symbolic. Colombia has been an important coal supplier, and Israel has relied on energy imports to support its economy and infrastructure. Reopening exports therefore signals both diplomatic repair and renewed economic partnership.

The decision also sends a political message. Colombia is moving away from Petro’s anti-Israel posture and toward a relationship based on trade, security cooperation, and shared strategic interests.

A Relationship Reopens

The change follows “Colombia’s President Thanks Israel For Rescue Aid.” That article reported that President Abelardo de la Espriella thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for Israeli humanitarian aid and rescue teams after the earthquake in Colombia.

That moment helped frame the new relationship. Israel was not only a distant diplomatic partner. It was a country sending help during disaster.

Now the coal decision adds an economic layer. Rescue aid showed friendship in crisis. Restored exports show that the relationship is moving back into normal state-to-state cooperation.

For Israel, this is a welcome reversal after Petro’s years of hostility. For the United States, it matters because Colombia is a major Western Hemisphere partner. A Colombia that rebuilds ties with Israel also strengthens the wider pro-Western alignment in Latin America.

That alignment matters at a time when Iran, radical leftist movements, and anti-Israel campaigns continue seeking influence across the region.

Friendship, Sovereignty And Return

The United States and Israel carry separate covenantal missions before God, and both understand the importance of faithful alliances. America’s mission includes strengthening free nations in its own hemisphere and resisting the spread of hostile ideological blocs. Israel’s mission requires building partnerships that protect Jewish sovereignty, trade, security, and national resilience.

Colombia’s decision does not solve every dispute. However, it marks a clear turn away from punishing Israel during a war launched by Hamas.

De La Espriella is signaling that Colombia’s relationship with Israel will no longer be defined by Petro’s pressure campaign. Instead, Bogotá is moving toward restoration.

That is why this coal decision matters beyond energy. It reflects a broader diplomatic shift: a major Latin American country is reopening the door to Israel, not closing it.
